Other names for zombies
Half the people searching for zombie names want a new word for the zombies themselves, because “walkers” and “infected” have been used a thousand times. These are the nicknames stories and players already use, and where they come from.

| Name | Where it comes from |
|---|---|
| Walkers, biters, roamers | What the survivors call them in The Walking Dead. |
| Infected | 28 Days Later and The Last of Us: used when a virus or a fungus is the cause. |
| Runners, stalkers, clickers, bloaters | The stages of infection in The Last of Us, each one a type of its own. |
| Ghouls | What Night of the Living Dead (1968) calls its dead. |
| Zack | Soldier slang in the World War Z novel. |
| Freakers | The game Days Gone. |
| Hungries | The Girl with All the Gifts. |
| Zeds, Z’s | Common shorthand in games and fan fiction. |
| Shamblers, rotters, stiffs, deadheads, groaners | General slang, named after how they move, smell or sound. |
| Undead, revenants, the risen | Older, more formal words that also cover ghosts and ghouls. |
Need a name nobody has used?
Choose Zombie types in the generator. It invents names for a whole kind of zombie, like Ashwalkers, Gnashjaws or the Breathless, and adds a trait such as Bloated or Screaming when you need a special type for your game or story.
Famous zombie names
A few zombies are famous by name: R, who narrates Warm Bodies; Bub, who learns to salute in Day of the Dead (1985); Fido, the zombie servant in the film of the same name; and Ed, who ends Shaun of the Dead as a zombie in the shed.
Names for the rest of your zombie world

How to come up with a good zombie name
A good zombie name tells you who the person was and what is left of them now. A few rules that work for games, stories and costumes alike:
- Keep a trace of the living name. The scariest zombies are people we recognise. “Rotten Sarah” works because Sarah is still in there.
- Add one word of decay, not five. Rotten, Pale, Hollow or Gnawing is enough. Stack too many and it reads like a joke, which is fine for a funny zombie name and wrong for a horror story.
- Use old names for old dead. Mortimer, Agatha and Ichabod sound like they came out of a churchyard. Modern names suit fresh zombies in a modern outbreak.
- Match the name to the tone. Cool zombie names are short and hard (Vex, Rotfang). Cute ones are soft and round (Mossy, Pip). Scary ones hint at something you do not want to see (Skinless Silas).
- Give survivors a nickname, not a title. Nobody in a zombie apocalypse is called “Lady”. They are called Crowbar, Doc or Lucky, after what keeps them alive.
- Name the kind, not just the one. If your story has zombies in it, decide what the survivors call them. A fresh word like Ashwalkers does more for a world than “zombies”.
- Say it out loud. If it is hard to say in a game chat or on a costume tag, pick the next one. The generator gives eight at a time for that reason.
Zombie name generator FAQ
Is the zombie name generator free?
Yes. It is free with no sign-up and no limit, and it does not use credits. Names are put together in your browser, and what you type is not sent to us or stored.
Can I turn my own name into a zombie name?
Yes. Type your name in the box and every result is built around it: a prefix like “Rotten Sarah”, a surname like “Sarah Gravesend”, a title, or a blend of your name with a zombie ending.
What is a cool name for a zombie?
Short names with hard sounds work best: Vex, Rotfang, Ashwalker, Nightgnaw or Grave Wraith. Press the generator with Neutral or Zombie types selected for more like them.
How do you name a zombie?
Start from who they were, then add one sign of decay: “Rotten Sarah”, “Mortimer Gravesend”. Old-fashioned names suit long-dead zombies, puns suit funny ones, and a hard single word suits a game boss.
What are other names for zombies?
Walkers, biters and roamers (The Walking Dead), infected (28 Days Later, The Last of Us), ghouls (Night of the Living Dead), freakers (Days Gone), zeds, shamblers, rotters and the undead. For a word nobody has used, choose Zombie types in the generator.
Is there a female zombie name generator?
Choose Female as the type. The names, titles and endings then come from a female word list, such as Lady Lenore Rotwood or Gravella Coffinwood.
Can it make zombie team or clan names?
Yes. Choose Team / clan for squad, gaming clan, survival group and group costume names like The Shambling Horde or Bite Club. Add your name for ones like “Sarah’s Rotting Horde”.
Does it work as a zombie apocalypse character generator?
Choose Survivor. Each result pairs a name and nickname, like Maya “Crowbar” Vance, with a life before the outbreak, such as ex-paramedic or park ranger. Choose Hunter for zombie hunters and killers.
Can it name my zombie movie, book or game?
Choose Movie or book title for titles like Winter of the Unburied or Outbreak: Port Mercy. Add your name for ones like “Sarah of the Dead”.
Is there a zombie virus name generator?
Choose Virus for the cause of the outbreak: names like The Lazarus Strain, Z-47 Virus or The Hollow Fever.
Can I use these zombie names in my game, book or video?
Yes. They are put together from common words and names, so use them for characters, usernames, stories, tabletop campaigns or videos as you wish.
Can I see what I would look like as a zombie?
Yes. The Zombie AI generator on our home page turns your photo into a zombie video. That part uses credits, and new accounts get some to try it.
